An Alta Vista home with decades of political significance has been updated to last here in the 21st Century. Lisa Causarano and her husband Keith Morley bought Roseheights, once the home of Louisville civic leader Wilson Wyatt, thinking they would flip and sell it immediately. However, they soon they fell in love with its charms and changed their minds.
The home, built in 1901, was once known as having prominence in American politics, says Causarano. Dignitaries such as President Lyndon Johnson, Harry S. Truman, Adlai Stevenson, and Eleanor Roosevelt were just a few of the guests at the home.
Causarano and Morley bought the home in 2010. It needed a lot of work. Structurally, there had been no significant changes since 1901, and the décor hadn't been updated since the 1980s when it was a Bellarmine University Show House. Morley's contract team got right to work updating the kitchen, making it functional for modern-day celebrations and renovating the rooms in the three-story mainand carriage houses. With the intent in mind that the house would be sold, the couple painted the walls a neutral blue and gray palate and put new water and electric in. They also stripped and refinished the floors, replastered the walls, replaced all the plumbing, electric and HVAC, completely painted the interior and exterior, downsized the pool area and added a pool house.
"Even though the house hadn't been well maintained, I could see it had great bones and such great character," Morley said. The family of two moved in before Derby 2011 and realized they loved living in the large house they now use for hosting parties and events.
"This house just needed someone to come in and love it … and we were those people," she says, comparing the home to the tree in Shel Silverstein’s classic children's book "The Giving Tree." "It has given us so much. It allowed us to do a lot, to meet a lot of people and it just keeps on giving."
