Blustery fall weather can be drying for the skin, causing the face to appear dull and lifeless. How can you keep the glow up going as the colder months approach? Book an appointment for dermaplaning, follow it up with a moisturizing facial, and let that youthful radiance shine on.
Dr. Juan Quintero’s plastic surgery practice in St. Matthews, JQ Plastics, performs dermaplaning and HydraFacial® treatments. Dermaplaning is a favorite of Medical Aestheticians Danielle Overton and Brittany Wesson to brighten the skin and improve the performance of skincare and makeup. The cell turnover provided through dermaplaning is key to combating dullness. The patented Vortex-Fusion technology of the HydraFacial®’s machine and treatment uses three steps: cleanse and peel, extract and hydrate, fuse and protect.
According to the HydraFacial website, “The spiral design of the HydraPeel® Tips, used in conjunction with the HydraFacial® proprietary vacuum technology and serums, creates a vortex effect to easily dislodge and remove impurities while simultaneously delivering hydrating skin solutions.” Danielle often performs dermaplaning and HydraFacial® in the same appointment. “People just love the two together,” she says because dermaplaning increases the effectiveness of the HydraFacial®. These treatments are perfect for special occasions such as holidays, weddings, and reunions.
Benefits of dermaplaning are better skincare penetration and makeup application, removal of facial hair that traps dirt and oil, smoother skin, removal of dead skin cells, reduction in the appearance of scarring, diminishment of fine lines, and instant results for all skin types with no downtime. The treatment is generally recommended every three to four weeks. Some benefits of HydraFacial® are hydration and nourishment on a deeper level, collagen stimulation, smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles, skin resurfacing, pore minimization, and reduction of brown spots and hyper-pigmentation. Bedded Bliss Linens
With the stress levels of 2020, we could all use a soft place to land at night. Restful, restorative sleep helps reduce anxiety and boosts the immune system. Bedded Bliss in Chenoweth Square has silky pajamas, plush robes, and luxury linens to wrap you up like royalty. Owner Donna Osif developed her exquisite taste at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan, NYC. For twenty years, she was a clothing buyer traveling extensively through Southeast Asia, until she was lured to Louisville by the owners of The Fashion Shop. Donna opened her boutique in 1997 as a gift shop with just two bed displays. Customers were so drawn to the lovely linens, particularly mattelassé coverlets, that Donna realized this was her niche.
Today’s Bedded Bliss customers are most interested in simple, elegant coverlets. Duvet covers can be a hassle to take off for washing and then put back on. Heavy quilts can be too hot for quality sleep. “The trend continues to grow for lightweight, easy-care coverlets in solid colors with textured fabrics in quilts, mattelassés, and luxurious silk/cotton blends. The most beautiful way to accent the coverlets is with luxurious embroideries from Italy that complement other fabrics in the room.” The best examples come from Donna’s best-selling Matouk® line.
With many boutique owners unwilling to travel to Atlanta Market this year, vendors are hitting the road instead. They say color is making a comeback in the world of home goods and linens, especially shades of green. Velvet is also seeing a resurgence in popularity for the coming fall and winter months.
Bedded Bliss carries a selection of incredibly soft cotton knit pajamas and silky satin ones from PJ Harlow. Fluffy chenille and lightweight cotton robes come in a variety of textures and colors. Visit beddedblisslinens.com for more.
Rolling Stock Specialty Auto Sales
Whether you are looking for that specialty auto of your dreams or rewarding yourself with an almost-like-new pristine daily driver, Cary Donovan at Rolling Stock can steer you to the ride of your life. After more than twenty-five years with the Sam Swope Auto Group, he learned what people disliked about buying a car, and knew exactly how that experience should be improved. Conventional car buying involves high-pressure sales, dealing with a salesperson and a sales manager, then waiting in queue for the finance officer. To "get past those pain points," Cary's customers receive individual, personal attention by appointment only. He is their trusted advisor, rather than a salesman. Whether you are buying or selling a vehicle, there is no pressure at Rolling Stock. This is a retirement hobby for Cary. "I do this for fun." He is living proof that "if you do something you love, you'll never work another day in your life.”
Rolling Stock opened about three years ago, and the business has grown in sales and repeat customers. With a little help from the internet, Cary has sold luxury automobiles and motorcycles to customers in 45 states. Louisville-area customers are fortunate to be much closer to the one-of-a-kind experience at Rolling Stock. There you will find vehicles for everyday dependability parked among the bling and performance automotive genius. Cary comments, "These vehicles are like my foster children." He wants the customer driving one home to "be an even better parent than I am."
Cary's policy is to be upfront and transparent about the vehicle’s pricing and condition. The website has extensive descriptions and photos of all inventory, links to CARFAX reports, Kelly Blue Book, and a trade-in value request form. The fun, ever-changing inventory in late August included a Ferrari Spider, Mercedes-Benzes, Porsches, a Jaguar, a Land Rover, a Ducati Superbike, Harley-Davidsons, a Polaris Slingshot, and many more. Visit rollingstockauto.com for more information and to schedule an appointment.
Bespoke perfume can cost thousands of dollars. For a luxury perfumery experience at a slightly more reasonable cost, American Perfumer® is the first retailer in the US to focus exclusively on American artisan perfume. Dave Kern started the business in August 2018. He is originally from Massachusetts and followed his wife to Louisville in 1995. After many years in nonprofit and for-profit businesses, including a successful commercial real estate career, Dave followed his nose to pursue a lifelong passion for scents. As a lover of food, wine, and whiskey, especially appreciating the olfactory experience involved, the pivot to perfumes felt quite natural.
There are a plethora of options for purchasing fragrance. Other points of sale involve salespeople often working on commission, but with limited product knowledge. Dave knows perfume and artisans’ intentions inside out. He recommends Five Perfumes to Wear Right Now:
“Our perfumes are as good as any in the world,” says Dave, “from imagination to formulation to production to the bottle.” Dave is also happy to do virtual consultations, spending as much as 30 minutes to an hour via Zoom or phone to discuss scent preferences and what the client is looking for in a perfume. Customization is on-trend in the world of fragrance. Dave listens to the customer and then hones in on just the right blends from his wide selection of award-winning, Made in the USA perfumes. He sends some samples; the customer makes a choice and completes the transaction from the comfort of home. To browse more perfume descriptions and fragrance notes, visit american-perfumer.com.
FINE WINES & TOP SHELF BOURBON
The Wine Rack
Whether new to fine wines and quality bourbons or a dedicated oenophile/bourbon expert, The Wine Rack in Crescent Hill can stock your bar with the best. Owner John Johnson graduated from U of L in 1991 with an Economics degree and spent ten years in the financial industry in Houston. An interest in cooking led him to Cook Street School of Culinary Arts in Denver, where he also studied wine. After traveling to France and Italy with the program, John eventually completed sommelier training and returned to Louisville. He felt the city needed a more refined liquor store emphasizing education, enjoyment, and personal attention. In January 2003, John opened The Wine Rack on Frankfort Avenue and has been in the current building since 2009.
In light of COVID, many wine and bourbon connoisseurs are shopping online or arranging in-store or curbside pick-up and treating themselves at home. Trying new wines from around the world is one way to travel vicariously, exploring different cultures and regions. John encourages potential customers that wine appreciation does not have to be intimidating. “I want to demystify wine. It’s not rocket science.” He has consistently offered free education and “guided flight” tasting events, including live Zoom tastings! On May 9, he held a Bordeaux Zoom tasting with Veronique Barthe of Château La Freynelle, Bordeaux, France. The virtual event was open to anyone, whether or not they had purchased the wine for tasting.
Nickel & Nickel Cabernet Sauvignon C.C. Ranch and Harris Vineyard Merlot are currently priced at around $140 for the pair, a tremendous savings. The left-bank Bordeaux vines of Chateau Meyney have been cultivated since the 1600s. Château Meyney St. Estephe vertical set (different vintages of the same wine) of 2015, 2016, and 2017 would be perfect for tasting at a socially-distanced porch party.
Bourbon and beer lovers enjoy The Wine Rack’s “On Location” Instagram Live series and following John’s Barrel Pick Program via social media and email. The Wine Rack features about six Barrel Picks per year, sometimes split with local restaurants. But act fast! A full barrel of 180+ bottles has been known to sell out in just two days! Be sure to check out The Wine Rack’s seasonal and customizable Gift Sets at wineshoplouisville.com. Follow The Wine Rack on Facebook to join the September 11 Willamette Valley, Oregon Zoom tasting.
Merkley Kendrick Jewelers
The trappings of success often develop high sentimental value as well. Nowhere is this more in evidence than at Merkley Kendrick Jewelers. Merkley Kendrick has devoted 188 years of service as Louisville’s oldest and most trusted source for fine jewelry and watches. James Lemon and William P. Kendrick established their jewelry business in downtown Louisville in 1832. After generations of name changes and relocations along Fourth Street, the Kendricks sold the company in 1966 to the Merkley family, operating out of the old Vogue Theater Center in St. Matthews. Merkley Kendrick opened their current Chenoweth location in 1971.
“Merkley Kendrick is the second oldest independently-owned retail jeweler in the United States,” says third-generation President & CEO Brian Merkley. Brian was initially interested in photography as a student at Loyola University. At that time, he viewed the family business as “too materialistic.” When National Geographic failed to come calling, he went to work for the family, thinking the situation would be temporary. Brian soon realized the importance of “walking the walk” and combating the misrepresentation sometimes experienced by customers at other jewelry stores. “We help clients slow down from the frantic pace of life by celebrating occasions with their loved ones, and provide the pieces that become heirlooms passed down through the family.”
Merkley Kendrick’s quality, high-end inventory offers a breadth of options for choosing that signature or collectible timepiece, romantic bridal and diamond jewelry, and keepsake estate and vintage styles. The full-service jewelry store creates custom pieces and does on-site jewelry repair and appraisals. Brian is especially proud of Merkley Kendrick’s own 1832 Collection of jewelry. Loose gemstones are carefully selected and set in custom designs of handcrafted metalwork. As an Official Rolex® Jeweler, Merkley Kendrick carries a wide range of styles and diligently strives to meet the demand for the brand’s Professional Collection of sport watches. This month they will launch their brand-new, top-tier Rolex® Certified Watch Service Center complete with an in-house watchmaker. Calospa® Rejuvenation Center
From the moment you walk into the beautiful atrium of Louisville’s CaloSpa® Rejuvenation Center near Holiday Manor, the experience is meant to feel “first in class, first in service.” Started 23 years ago by board-certified, West Coast trained Dr. Brad Calobrace, the MediSpa and Plastic Surgery Center offers the latest techniques and technology. Because plastic surgery is elective, spa services go perfectly hand-in-hand to provide various surgical and nonsurgical options that make you look and feel your very best. Dr. Calobrace’s partner, Dr. Chet Mays, took some time to explore several of those options with us.
Dr. Mays is originally from Somerset, Kentucky, and attended the University of Louisville School of Medicine. His father and three brothers are also surgeons, although Chet is the only plastic surgeon in the family. Dr. Mays was still in medical school when he met Dr. Calobrace. After a 6-year residency at the University of Rochester in New York, Dr. Mays eventually partnered with Dr. Calobrace at CaloSpa®. The Rejuvenation Center is on the left side of the building as you walk in and greets you with an immediately relaxing two-story waterfall. “Each detail, each curve in the wall, the sounds, and the scents, fill the senses.”
CaloSpa® Rejuvenation Center services include massages, facials, cupping therapy, and noninvasive, tone-and-sculpt body treatments such as CoolSculpting® and Emsculpt®. The highly-trained staff carries all necessary certifications and safety training, but each has their own special touches to make every spa day unique. The Rejuvenation Center is an ideal environment to prepare for a wedding day, and gift certificates to the spa make perfect bridesmaids’ gifts. CaloSpa® often runs specials and has additional locations in Floyds Knobs, Indiana and Lexington, Kentucky. For more information, visit calospa.com.
SMART HOME LIVING
Imagine arriving home after a long day at work. You walk in the door and say, “Alexa, turn on evening.” Like magic, the lights come up, your favorite music turns on, and the thermostat adjusts to the perfect temperature. Phil Chaney of Automated Lifestyles in Louisville can make that dream a reality. Phil’s roots in the business come from custom car audio in Louisville and Bowling Green. While living in Bowling Green, he worked in home audio/video and returned to Louisville to work with Ovation in the early 1990s. He started Automated Lifestyles in April 2007 and is in his 14th year of business.
The business began by building home theaters doing business as Visual Concepts and evolved into a total turn-key smart home technology company. Automated Lifestyles focuses on being a “turn-key, one-stop-shop with concierge-level service and one point of accountability.” They build custom solutions for their clients with a proactive approach to maintenance and service. With one phone call to your cable and internet provider, Automated Lifestyles can handle all service and maintenance needs on your behalf. The business is 40% residential, 40% commercial, and 20% hospitality. Similar to the “turn on evening” example above, Automated Lifestyles has engineered “hello” and “goodbye” settings and systems for local companies to control lights, sound, thermostats, and more. This allows businesses to focus on their core operations, and the facility manages itself.
Business is booming lately with outdoor environments, including directional outdoor audio, mood lighting, and outdoor weatherproof screens. Custom overlays of lighting, speakers, and screens can be created through drone photography to give potential clients a visual impression of your property’s possibilities. Automated Lifestyles has partnered with Coastal Source, Forever Lawn, Steepleton, and Okes Lawn & Landscape to provide an outdoor experience like no other, transforming their 10,000 square foot parking lot into an Outdoor Experience Space on September 11 and 12. If you are unable to check out the latest and greatest audio, video, and lighting on those dates, in-home demo kits will be made available. For more information, visit automatedlifestyles.com.
