Susan G. Komen Kentucky and the Louisville Waterfront Development Corporation will partner to light the Big Four Bridge pink on Friday, Oct. 11 in honor of the annual Louisville Race for the Cure on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Cardinal Stadium during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The much-anticipated signature event raises significant funds and awareness for the breast cancer movement in order to achieve Susan G. Komen’s bold goal: to reduce the number of breast cancer deaths by 50 percent in the U.S. by 2026. Komen Kentucky is dedicated to saving lives by meeting the most critical needs in the community and invest in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer.
The local Affiliate aims to raise $200,000 during this year’s Louisville Race for the Cure to fund local services offering breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment support programs and Susan G. Komen global breast cancer research. In addition to raising funds for breast cancer, the Race tells the story of Komen’s impact, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those we have lost to this disease.
“Every 13 minutes one woman in the U.S. will lose her life to breast cancer, but through this impactful event, we’re actively working to combat this statistic and eventually end this disease forever,” said Lynda Weeks, Executive Director of Susan G. Komen Kentucky. “This is all thanks to our supporters and survivors who step up and take action every year by fundraising for the cause.”
An estimated 9,000 community members cross the finish line each year during the Louisville Race for the Cure. This year, University of Louisville’s baseball team will make a special appearance at the Race to support Komen Kentucky’s mission.
The event begins with a Survivor Breakfast at 7:00 a.m., followed by the Parade of Hope at 8:40 a.m. to honor breast cancer survivors, the 5K race at 9:00 a.m. and the 1-mile walk at 9:15 a.m.
To register for the Race, participants will pay an entry fee of $35.00, which includes a race number and a Susan G. Komen Kentucky Race for the Cure t-shirt.
