LOUISVILLE, KY – Our favorite fairytale characters will be journeying onto the stage and into our hearts as The J’s CenterStage brings us Into the Woods October 18 – November 4, 2018.
This Tony Award-winning musical, masterfully written by Stephen Sondheim and based on the book by James Lapine, features several familiar stories: Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, Cinderella, and others… thrown into a grand adventure in the woods when a childless baker and his wife attempt to break a witch’s family curse, hoping to start a family.
Anyone who has read The Grimm Brothers’ stories knows that they can be dark and full of interesting twists and turns. This stage production, too, explores some important themes. "We know that fairy tales have lessons to teach children,” says the show’s director, Michael Drury, “Sondheim's Into the Woods as a 'mash-up' of fairy tales has lessons to teach all of us personally - but also on a societal level.”
This will be Drury’s directorial debut at CenterStage, though he is no novice. He currently serves as Artistic Director of Pandora Productions, and has enjoyed collaborating with theater companies all throughout Greater Louisville, including Derby Dinner Playhouse, Clarksville Little Theatre, Louisville Repertory Company, and the Shelby County Community Theatre. While this is Drury’s directorial debut, he is a familiar face on the CenterStage Playbill, performing last as Fagin in Oliver.
With a Tony Award-winning score and story, Into the Woods is a powerhouse production. An ensemble cast allows many familiar and new faces to shine – the trouble-causing Witch to be played by Andrea Diggs, who brought a strong, commanding performance to CenterStage’s recent production of Hairspray as Motormouth Maybelle. Andrew Newton and Tymika Prince will play the Baker and his wife, both of whom have impressed audiences with their charisma and talent in previous CenterStage productions.
Following a highly successful run of Hairspray, CenterStage is thrilled to continue pushing the envelope with their content and programming. “Originally written, though arguably, as a political commentary, Woods continues to inspire our individual growth and our collective responsibility to our communities,” continues director Drury, “From my point of view, Woods demands an exploration of the societal issues we currently face.”
